Algae Emerges Immediately
Just 24 hours after the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool was refilled following a $14.2 million renovation ordered by President Donald Trump, algae began to discolor the water. CNN observed workers on June 10 already scraping algae from the bottom of the freshly filled basin. Within days, warm Washington weather spread the green bloom across the iconic landmark.
Trump had touted the overhaul as a permanent fix, declaring the pool “filthy” under previous administrations and promising it would now “reflect beautifully.” Instead, the return of algae immediately undercut his narrative of a flawless upgrade.
Trump’s Boastful Renovation
Announced in April 2026, the renovation aimed to paint the concrete floor “American flag blue” and fix leaks. The no-bid contract went to Atlantic Industrial Coatings, a Virginia firm that had previously worked on a swimming pool at one of Trump’s golf clubs. The 2,030-foot-long pool, which holds 6.75 million gallons, was drained for two months and reopened on June 6. In public appearances, Trump repeatedly exaggerated the project’s cost under Barack Obama, falsely claiming “hundreds of millions” had been spent, whereas a 2012 restoration actually cost $35.3 million.
The White House official X account posted even before refilling was complete: “The water is ON, the Reflecting Pool is reflecting, and D.C. is looking better than ever.”
Reality Catches Up
By June 14, National Park Service employees were photographed in waders manually removing algae from the green-tinted pool. The next day, the water remained discolored. Interior Department officials blamed “residual algae from the supply lines” and claimed newly installed nanobubbler technology would eliminate the problem. A spokesman insisted on June 16 that “the algae is dead and being vacuumed up as we speak.”
But experts warned the anti-algae system may face an uphill battle. Algae biotechnologist Alla Silkina noted that darker surfaces, like the new blue bottom, can encourage algae growth. Meanwhile, a New York Times analysis in May had already revealed that the renovation did not address leaky pipes that waste up to 16 million gallons of water annually. Unstable silt beneath the 1920s-era pool continues to cause cracking and chronic leakage.
The reflecting pool, where Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech in 1963, holds immense symbolic weight. Trump’s renovation was part of a broader push to reshape Washington landmarks ahead of the nation’s 250th birthday on July 4, 2026. With algae already clouding the water, the question lingers: Can the pool actually stay clear, or will the green tinge become a recurring symbol of an unfinished fix?
