On live television from the White House South Lawn, undefeated UFC heavyweight Josh Hokit ended his post-fight interview by shouting a crude conspiracy theory about former First Lady Michelle Obama — and the backlash was immediate.
The moment came after Hokit secured a TKO victory over Derrick Lewis at UFC Freedom 250 on June 14, 2026, the first professional sporting event ever held at the White House. The event doubled as a celebration of America's 250th anniversary and President Donald Trump's 80th birthday, with Trump, Melania Trump, Mark Zuckerberg, JD Vance, and Tyson Fury among those in attendance.
From Praise to Provocation on Live TV
During his Octagon interview with commentator Joe Rogan, Hokit first thanked Jesus Christ and praised Trump for hosting the event. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, he declared: "Michelle Obama is a man. Am I right, America?" The crowd on the South Lawn reacted with shocked silence; the larger watch party on the Ellipse heard a mix of nervous laughter and groans. ESPN reported that Rogan did not address the remark, merely saying, "Ladies and gentlemen, Josh Hokit."

UFC Boss Dana White Condemns 'Nasty and False' Comment
UFC President and CEO Dana White, who has long championed free speech, distanced himself from Hokit's outburst in a text message to Time Magazine. White wrote: "I understand that the Obamas are public figures but I'm completely against saying nasty and false things about people's families. Everyone knows my position on free speech but I hate that kind of nonsense."

White House spokesman Steven Cheung sidestepped any rebuke. When asked about the insult, Cheung told Variety: "He had a great win last night. He showed toughness and the ability to pressure his opponent both on his feet and on the ground." Meanwhile, former FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino described the moment as "probably the most unexpected and unintentionally hilarious moment of the night" to TMZ.
A Fighter With a History of Targeting Women
This is not the first time Hokit has used his platform to attack female athletes. After his UFC 324 victory in January 2026, he called WNBA star Brittney Griner "a man." That comment also drew criticism, but Hokit has made clear he doesn't care about public opinion. His Instagram response after the latest uproar underscored that stance.
The 28-year-old Hokit, a former Fresno State wrestler and NFL hopeful, is unbeaten at 10-0 and ranked among the UFC's top heavyweights. His fighting record and aggressive persona have earned him a following, but his press conference antics — including a brawl with lighter fighters — have already raised red flags about his conduct.
A $60 Million Spectacle Overshadowed
UFC Freedom 250 was a historic undertaking: the first pro sports event on White House grounds, costing at least $60 million in federal resources. The main event saw Justin Gaethje upset Ilia Topuria for the lightweight title, but the spectacle will likely be remembered for Hokit's incendiary remark and the White House's refusal to condemn it.
Dana White had predicted trouble. In a May interview with ESPN, he said he never tells fighters what to say but admitted about Hokit: "I promise you, bad things are going to happen to be said. That I can almost guarantee you." No immediate disciplinary action has been announced against Hokit by the UFC.
Michelle Obama's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The silence from the former first lady leaves the controversy hanging — and a question mark over whether Hokit will face any consequences for turning a national celebration into a platform for a debunked conspiracy theory.
